Food and DJ

Food must be served at a wedding social.
People pay $10 to come, and they expect to be fed.
Plus, Manitoba Liquor Commission has a policy that if you are serving alcoholic beverages, food must also be served.

What food should be served?
  • Deli Meats
  • Bread/Buns
  • Cheese
  • Salads
  • Cakes
  • Desserts
  • Ethnic Cuisines
  • Finger foods
  • Pasta
  • Perogies
  • Fruit Platters
  • Raw Veggie Platters
  • Small sandwiches
  • Hot food with food warmers
For my wedding social, everyone knew they'll get a full belly for their $10 and so people came because they knew that they wouldn't be disappointed with the food.    And once they were in and their bellies were full, they spent money.

Again, if you have family or friends that asks you how they can help for your social, you can suggest having them make food.  They don't need to make enough for 300 people.  That's too much pressure, plus if there's a variety of food, people would only take a small amount of each dish.

If you don't have family or friends that you can rely on to help with the food, you will have to get some catering.  Deli meats are always popular, but boring.   You can get some pasta or spring rolls ordered from a restaurant that would cost as much as a deli meat platter, but much more satisfying.

Music is very important and so a good DJ is what can make or break a social.  I've been to socials where there were no people dancing and everyone was just looking bored.  The DJ played music that was 10 years old and as a result, many people left early.

My social had the best DJ.  He had the music blaring and the dance floor packed. And months later, everyone still talks about how it was the best social and how their feet still hurt from all the dancing.  And when there's dancing, there's an urgent need to buy liquor.

You will need to meet with the DJ beforehand and pick out some songs so your DJ can come prepared.  I knew that a third of my social attendees are into line dancing, and so I made sure that my DJ came with line dancing songs.   If the people are happy, more drinks will be bought.  Look at the popular bars in the city.  The nights that they have the place packed is when they have a good DJ playing.

TIP:  For most socials, people expect the future bride and groom to do a first dance and then the dance floor is open to everyone.  If you find that no one is dancing yet, be prepared to do a first dance and that may help to get things going.
